Parasites What is a Parasite? A parasite is an organism that lives by feeding upon another organism. Parasites living in the human body feed on our cells, our energy, our blood, the food we eat and even the supplements we take. There are several types of parasites: protozoa are single celled organisms that are only visible under a microscope, while worms come in all sizes from threadworms, that measure less than one centimeter, to tapeworms that grow up to 12 meters in length.

Who can get a parasite?
It is a common misconception that parasites exist only in third world countries. Over 130 types of parasites have been found in Americans. Parasites are transmitted from person to person, pets, insects, soil, unfiltered water and even tap water. For example, Cryptosporidium, has been found in municipal water sources across the U.S. and can cause diarrhea and cramps. Cryptosporidium can be lethal to the elderly, small children and people with compromised immune systems.

- Trichinosis: enter the human digestive system from pork or bear meat, enter the blood stream and settle in muscles and other tissue.

What are the symptoms of a parasite?
Many parasites cause noticeable symptoms, such as rectal itching or diarrhea, but some cause no noticeable symptoms. Because some parasites can travel through the blood to any organ, parasites can cause problems that are often not recognized as parasite-related. A parasitic infection can often go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. For example, a roundworm infestation in the stomach can give the appearance of a peptic ulcer. Chronic giardiasis can be an undetected element or missing diagnosis in Irritable Bowel Syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome.

How to detect a parasite.
A stool analysis is the most common method used to detect parasites. However, stool tests results can show a false negative if the parasite lives in the small intestine or elsewhere in the body. If the parasites are in the liver, heart or lungs, a stool test would commonly result in a false negative.
Why are parasites a problem?
Parasites rob their host of nutrients by feeding on blood cells, tissue cells, and the food the host eats. Tapeworms, for example, take nutrients directly from the digestive system, that is, they eat the food before we can absorb it. This can cause malnutrition even in a person who eats a balanced, healthy diet. Parasites can cause diarrhea, which leads to nutrient malabsorption; because with diarrhea, food transit time can be so fast that the intestine does not have time for proper nutrient absorption. Parasites also cause damage to the lining of the digestive tract. This damage, or increased permeability, can allow large molecules to enter the blood stream and lymphatic system, which can trigger an autoimmune response.
Not only do parasites cause damage to the host, so do the wastes that they secrete. These waste products poison the body, forcing the organs of elimination to work harder to eliminate the extra toxic load. Processing these wastes can also stress the immune system. As the detoxification organs become overwhelmed, nutritional reserves are depleted and the immune system is weakened. The result can be the development of disease.

What contributes to parasitic infestation?
Firstly, nutritional deficiencies appear to play a role in providing a safe place for parasites to flourish. Secondly, many drugs commonly used today are immune suppressive and decrease our ability to fight off a parasite. Most importantly, dysbiosis, or bad bacteria overgrowth, contributes to parasitic infestation of the digestive system. Ideally, the bacterial balance in the intestines is 80% good and neutral and 20% bad. In this ratio, the good bacteria produces vitamins, digests carbohydrates and creates an unfriendly environment for other organisms. Once the balance is disturbed, other organisms begin to thrive in the human digestive system. Candida albicans is a common yeast organism that “waits” for the opportunity to grow and become overgrown. Parasites and yeast overgrowth are often found together.
