The organic production of tea is a relatively new development – dating back only 7 to 10 years. Cultivation under organic rules is rigidly controlled and subject to certification for each individual tea garden. All fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides must be absolutely free of chemicals and must rely totally on substances such as dung, compost, natural organic matter. The aims of organic estates are to achieve long-term sustainability of soil fertility and productivity, protect the environment and create a form of organic micro-system that produces economically viable tea that is totally free of chemicals. This is very important for Tea drinkers as the leaves are not washed before processing.
